This day will be spent building on knowledge and basic practical beekeeping skills. This is a natural follow on from our Practical Beekeeping – The Basics course. With a greater focus on managing multiple hives, this course will take you through hive management in greater detail.

With a focus on managing colony numbers, you will learn more about practical swarm control and managing colony numbers. By the end of the day you will have built up practical skills and knowledge which will enable you to better manage multiple colonies of bees.

This course builds on your basic beekeeping knowledge and practical skills. It is the natural follow on from our Practical Beekeeping – The Basics course. It is generally agreed that having at least two hives is better than having one. This is because it makes hive management easier and allows for comparison between multiple hives, making it easier to spot problems earlier.

Course Content

This course has a focus on the wider management of honeybee colonies.You will learn more about manipulations and hive management with plenty of practical to develop your skills and build your confidence.

Swarm control, feeding and making increases/decrease are just some of the manipulations which will be covered. In addition to manipulations, there will be a focus on spotting problems and problem solving. This will equip you with the confidence and skills to make decisions about how to progress with your hive and resolve problems you encounter on your beekeeping journey.

You will need to bring welly boots and waterproofs. You will also require a bee suit and gloves, if you don’t yet have one then please let us know so we can provide one.


This course will be held at our site just outside of South Molton, North Devon. We will provide you with details prior to your course date with an address and directions.
